Beginner knitters might balk at the idea of one day designing their own homemade clothes. However, with plenty of practice and a sensible pattern to follow, there's no reason not to aim high.
One woman from Huddersfield recently took on the huge challenge of hand-knitting her own wedding dress, after becoming annoyed at what the shops had to offer her.
The quest for the perfect gown can cause brides-to-be a lot of stress, therefore, if you're creative and a dab hand at knitting or crochet, it could make sense to dive in and give crafting your own a serious go.
Lydia Tayler has always been a keen knitter, first beginning at the age of six and going on to open up her new shop Spun 20 years later.
Launching her new store has given her the confidence to take on such a huge project, she told The Huddersfield Daily Examiner.
"Knitting is a huge part of my life and I always knew I would want it to form some part of our wedding," she explained.
Ms Tayler said: "Since the age of 16, I have been knitting all sorts including scarves and jumpers."
The dress itself took her four months to complete, and despite what her friends and family imagined it would look like she was keen to avoid a stereotyped thick, knitted, jumper-like dress.
"I used lace-weight Merino wool, so that it was delicate and light," she revealed, giving the gown a real summery feel.
The knitted dress was placed over a white silk slip, and featured a high-neck lace effect and full-length skirt, without sleeves.
Ms Tayler went on to advise anyone considering making their own hand-knitted dress to "go for it", as "there's nothing better than walking down the aisle knowing you've got a totally unique dress on and one that you've made yourself".
