A church group in Broomfield, Colorado are bringing warmth to their community and those less fortunate through their impressive knitted donations.
The Women’s Gathering, a group of ladies from Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, have been using their skills, and a large collection of donated yarn, to crochet and knit hats, scarves and blankets.
They have also been mending clothing sent to them, Broomfield Enterprise reports.
But rather than keeping these garments for their friends and family they have been putting together packages to help communities in Colorado and South Dakota.
Each week a new pile of finished designs is made, which can then be sent out to areas such as the Pine Ridge Oglala Sioux reservation in South Dakota, which is one of the poorest areas of the US.
Here winters are bitterly cold, so hats, mittens and blankets are given.
Dotti Moyer, who leads the Women’s Gathering, estimated that more than 700 hats, mittens and neck warmers have been constructed over the past four years, as well as over 250 bed covers.
After visiting the area, Ms Moyer said: “Most homes are heated with propane that many people cannot afford to purchase, therefore in the winter, they have no heat and no inside water.”
The group have even donated fleece blankets for the local children to use while they travel on the buses to and from school.
Many other charities are helped too, with rag dolls donated to Court Appointed Special Advocates in South Dakota, which works with abused children, and A Precious Child, which helps children and babies in need.
The group also help assemble first aid kits and act as a support network for women in the community, giving them the chance to not only hone their knitting skills, but also an opportunity to socialise and help their local area.
