Hull knitters cover phone box for Comic Relief

Knitters in Hull have impressed with their charitable efforts after turning a Hull phone box red in aid of Comic Relief.

The Knitwits group were asked to make an enormous red knitted cosy to cover the city centre box, and have more than risen to the challenge.

Speaking to Hull Daily Mail, co-founder of the club, Liz Pacey said she was very proud of the finished result.

"I was very surprised when we were asked to do it but we were happy to give it a go. We all took on a section between the 15 of us and then got together to stitch it all together," Mrs Pacey explained.

Despite initial fears that it wouldn't fit over the phone box, plenty of care was taken to ensure that the measurements were accurate.

Mrs Pacey joked that while the group did get strange looks when they were sizing up the phone box, due to the members' mature ages, nobody seemed too worried.

This isn't the first charitable work that Knitwits have done, as they have also helped with Beverley-based Real Aid, and sent many knitted items to Africa and premature babies.

Being involved with campaigns like Red Nose Day, is something the group is keen to do, as it keeps the members on their toes and challenges them to try unusual designs.

Knitwits member Marie Brown told the publication that a lot of hard work was put into this particular project.

"We had to start on the project around Christmas time… We were each given a specific piece to do before meeting up to sew it all together. It's difficult to picture how it will work when you are knitting just one section. But looking at it in context, it works really well," she explained.

The group have been praised by the Comic Relief team for their hard work and are encouraging others to do something funny for money on this year's Red Nose Day on March 15th.
