Picking up a pair of knitting needles can be a brilliant way to learn a new skill and make yourself some clothing, accessories or decorative items.
But while it is practically a great talent to have, it can also be extremely beneficial to your health and wellbeing, offering a way to relax and interact with others in new environments.
It doesn't matter whether or not you're new to the craft, as there are many ways to get involved.
Hilary Bruffell, co-founder of makeitandmendit.com, a site which aims to help people reduce their outgoings, while also swapping ideas and sharing inspiration with like minded people, says there are lots of knitting clubs around the country you could join.
"Look online, or a local library may be able to help you find them," she suggested.
"The best way is to find a friend who is willing to help you, but also there is joining clubs, groups and even teaching yourself via sites," Ms Bruffell went on to recommend.
This could be through YouTube video tutorials or signing up to join an online knitting community, which may also have a forum to answer your questions or offer any tips on getting started.
She also explained a new site that she was working on, called Makeyourselfhappy.com, which "is about the therapeutic effects of making things".
"It's making therapy as opposed to talking therapy, and encouraging people to set up groups, take courses and generally have a go at making things," Ms Bruffell commented.
By talking to like-minded people you can help build up social connections and friendships, as well as learning or improving new skills.
Being able to hand-knit your own garments or designs can also be immensely rewarding, especially when you can see your abilities improve over time.
Why not set yourself some targets and plan to complete some Christmas patterns in time for December?
