You might remember last year when Marie Claire featured a classic collection of contemporary crochet designs by Hollywood stylist Sarah Wallner.
They caused quite a storm and the creator of the Musotica label has been credited with helping bring this look up to date, as a modern and exciting fabric.
Ms Wallner terms the past year as "the crochet revolution," and recently told Fibre2Fashion that it’s the versatility of this woven yarn that makes it so special.
"Today's crochet fashions look amazing in and out of the water, and they can also be worn as cover-ups with jeans, dresses, skirts, shorts - you name it," she said.
The Hollywood A-list are lapping up crochet fashions at present, with Rihanna and Lana del Rey fusing together vintage chic with fresh summer tailoring.
For beachwear in particular, she said that this style is "perfect for any woman who wants to add a splash of colour, sexiness and style to their wardrobe".
Crochet is a relatively adaptable look, and is suitable for daily wear using cotton blends in neutral shades.
For more seasonal items such as swimwear you can afford to experiment, with Ms Wallner claiming "the rainbow is literally the limit".
The texture of the fabric makes it slightly more unusual, with a definite retro edge, while patterns such as flowers or spots could help you bring a little extra personality to your beach wardrobe.
Handmade crocheted items require attention to detail, but if they're as small as a bikini they can probably be constructed in only a few hours.
The handmade nature and the use of a bold Rowan cotton will make them look and feel softer and more luxurious, which is especially important when you're wearing little else!
Tie details on the side of the knickers and the back of the bikini top allows you to get creative with bows or braiding, while the addition of chunky beads will help give your garments a professional finish.
