A town in Illinois is attempting to break two Guinness World records, after making giant wooden knitting needles and a crochet hook.

The small community of Casey this week had the items officially measured at Monroe Elementary School, with steward Nicole Weigand confirming that it will take two weeks before they can confirm whether the needles and hook are indeed the world's largest.

After the official measuring of the needles and hook at Monroe Elementary School in Casey, Nicole Weigand, stewardof the Guinness Book of World Records, said it will take two weeks before it will be known if Bolin’s attempts were record breaking due to an extensive research and paperwork process. reports that Jim Bolin, vice president of Bolin Enterprises Inc designed the knitting needles and crochet hook for Jeanette Huisinga, who owns The Yarn Studio in the town centre.

The needles were measured at 13.75 feet long and 3.25 inches in diameter, while the crochet hook is 6.15 feet andthree inches in diameter, according to Ms Weigand.

Ingrid Wagner in the UK is currently the record holder for the world's largest knitting needles at 11 feet, 5.8 inches long and 3.15 inches in diameter. She used these to knit a 10-by-10ft tension square in March 2008 at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.

At present there is no known record holder for the world's largest crochet hook, however the Guinness requirement states it should be ten times the size of the original hook.

Mr Bolin explained that he was inspired to make the knitting needles and crochet hook for Ms Huisinga, who is the cousin of his wife, as he wanted to attract more people to her great store.

He told the newspaper: "I'm hoping it will help draw more people to her shop, but also I feel great for the community because it's something they can share and show people in Casey."

This is not the first record breaking attempt for Mr Bolin, as he also currently holds the titles for World's Largest Wind Chime and World's Largest Gold Tee.
