'Try loose-fit items' for maternity knitwear

When expecting a baby, this is often a great excuse to practice your knitting, trying out baby clothes patterns or making tiny blankets.

But if you've got pretty crafty friends and family, chances are your home will quickly fill with booties and crocheted bonnets.

Pregnancy can also be a brilliant time to relax and do some knitting for yourself, giving you a practical way to unwind, while also allowing you to design some new clothes for yourself.

Jane Fardon, an image consultant and founder of Jane Fardon Cosmetics, claims that "you will be warmer than you normally are so layers you can easily take off and put on are a good idea".

Knitting should be a calming practice, so giving yourself plenty of time is advisable, meaning you can then try and make looks for your final trimester.

Ms Fardon said: "If you have a neat bump you'll look great in a figure hugging top or dress (of course not too tight as it will be really uncomfortable). Cotton jersey is a good fabric to choose if you want to do the 'bump hugging' look as it has a lot of give in it."

Alternatively, she suggests "if that's not for you, try a loose top paired with a cropped cardigan or little jacket on top to pull you in and give a bit of shape".

Whatever stage of pregnancy or post-pregnancy you are at, Ms Fardon recommends focusing on accessories, which could include a crocheted floral brooch, some colourful lace-knit scarves or perhaps some chunky necklaces.

Wearing bold and intricate accessories can really help you make a statement, while also remaining lovely and comfy.
